Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, Bill Mobley has lived in New York City since 1987. He has performed in New York with the Marvin "Smitty" Smith Sextet, the Clifford Jordan Big Band, the George Coleman Octet, the James Williams Group, the Goeff Keezer Band, the Mingus Dynasty Band, the T.S. Monk Band, the Maria Schneider Orchestra, the Toshiko Akiyoshi Orchestra, and has led his own Space Time Jazz Orchestra in various venues in the City. Bill has toured in Europe with his own group, and with those of Donald Brown and James Williams. In the case of James Williams, tours also included Japan. Bill also is a regular performer with the NuYorkestra, as well as the Mobscene Quintet and the SpaceTime big Band.
Bill taught music at the Berklee School of Music in Boston from 1982-1986, and presently teaches at William Paterson University in New Jersey. Bill has also taught at Summer Jazz Camps in Maine, and Public City Schools of New York as a visiting artist through the company 144 Music and Arts.
Bill has conducted clinics in performance, arranging and composition at colleges and universities across the United States. He holds a Masters Degree in Music from Manhattan School of Music (1987). He currently teaches at the William Peterson College.
